Lead acid batteries work by isolating two electrodes (made of different metals) with an electrolyte (such as sulfuric acid). As the battery is discharged, some of that sulfuric acid converts into water. When you recharge the battery, the water is converted back into sulfuric acid, and hydrogen. The hydrogen is released as a natural byproduct of charging.
