How does a bone scan indicate cancer?

Bone abnormalities usually show up as dark spots on the scan. However, this does not necessarily mean the patient has cancer. Further testing with an MRI is then needed.

Bone scans are usually done of the entire body, so doctors can see tumors on the imaging films after a bone scan.

Cancer cells need to consume glucose in greater quantities than normal cells. If glucose that is radioactive is given to a patient, it will preferentially accumulate in the cancerous growths, even if they are in the bones. A special camera can then detect the areas with increased radioactivity.
