How do you troubleshoot a dishwasher?

I, most often, troubleshoot a dishwasher by first looking in the dishwasher owner's manual. If I cannot find the answer there, I typically look online, using google.

Before you call a repairman, it is important to follow a few steps. Check the cord, the breaker, all inside parts and to see if something is jammed inside the mechanism. All pieces should be clean and fit into the slot intended for that piece. Usually these steps will do the trick.
