well one way would be to fill up your fuilds and turn on the car and see if it is leaking.

Really there is no way to test to make sure it works. Check your manual to see how often it needs to be replaced.

First fill the water in the tank and than switch on the water pump then the water will come with your requirement, otherwise check your water pump with manually and repair it.

If the water pump is not working ,the first symptom that will show in your car is over heating. First check any coolant leak from the water pump. This can be done by checking any coolant drops coming out from the water pump weep hole. This will happen if the inner seal got damaged/ broken. This will lead to Waterpump bearing failure.
