How do you sharpen the blades on hockey skates?

I'm not sure if it is a DIY task or if I should take them somewhere.

Sharpening blades on hockey skates is definitely a task that should be done by a professional. It is dangerous for you and harmful to your skates to do it yourself if you don't have the right equipment. Sharpening blades on hockey skates is critical to achieve the best results for skating.

You can take the skates to your local ice rink and have them sharpened for a small fee. It is generally a good idea to pay someone to sharpen your blades, because the goal of sharpening is to take of the minimal amount of metal possible while honing an edge that will cause your skate to glide on the ice.

Any ice rink should have this information, since they deal with skates all the time and have them sharpened probably each season.

Getting a good edge on a hockey skate is not a DIY task unless you have the right equipment. A hockey skate blade actually has an outside and inside edge with a cup in the middle. A grinder for skates will sharpen the edges while leaving the cup.

To sharpen the blades on your hockey skates, you should use an automated whetting stone (which will spin at high speeds and polishes and sharpens your skate's edge). It's cheaper and easier to bring it to an expert (who will have the equipment) to sharpen your skates, rather than do it yourself and risk damaging the skates (or yourself).

Unless you have the right equipment to sharpen skates, you should take them somewhere and have it done professionally. This will ensure the best sharpening you can get.

This is not something you want to do on your own. Take it to your local hockey store and have them do it.
