Rock candy is made by creating a thick solution of sugar in water. Boil 2 cups of water and dissolve four cups of sugar into the water. You then hang a string in the solution and it will gather crystals. Kids could do this with supervision.

Rock candy is basically boiled sugar water put into a jar with a string in it. It is simple and a good science experiment to show children how crystals are made. It would require adult supervision, but children could do it if they were careful with the boiling syrup.
