How do you litter train kittens?

My cat just had a litter of five and I want to know how to train them.

It is their instinct to use the litter box and generally no training is necessary, especially if their mother is litter trained because she will teach them to use it. Just provide a box with low sides so they can get in and out easily. Start out with non-clumping litter in case of accidental swallowing.

Kittens will naturally use litter once they feel comfortable. You may want to keep the kittens confined to an area where you can put newspaper down for mini accidents, but keep a small container of litter in the room for the kittens to investigate and try when comfortable.

once they are weaned from their momma, all you have to do is show them where the litter box is. make sure its clean, and sit them down in it. take its paws and dig around a little in the box. they will usually go right back.

Usually, you do not need to litter train kittens - the mother cat will teach them herself. Kittens learn many things from their mother simply by watching and repeating what she does. This includes going to the bathroom in the right place. You simply need to provide a clean litterbox with walls low enough that kittens can climb in easily.
