Personally I prefer to have a sweeping stroke on chips and pitches instead of hitting down. I like to sweep the grass 3 times before taking my real stroke. That seems to work out very well for me.

First, choke down a little more on the grip. Then, practice your chips and pitch shots with these two objectives in mind: a shorter backswing and accelerate through the ball.

Be sure to place the ball in the back of your stance. Start with your feet "open" to your target, and make sure your hands are ahead of the ball.

Lead with the left hand and your wait on the left leg. Keep the hands in front of the ball. Aim the club for the back of the ball. Hit the ball first on a downward stroke, allowing the club face to lift the ball. Hit the ball and brush the grass.

You will want to address the ball with if somewhat in the front of your stance. then make sure to start with your hands a little out front of the ball. Then take a shallow back swing. Do not drop your shoulder.
