You probably don't want to get rid of the spiders. Spiders are a critical part of the food chain as they eat tons of small insects. If you remove the spider the other small insects will flourish and things will be worse.

Spiders are very useful in eating bugs. Eucalyptus leaves, pieces of hedge apples also called Osage orange, penny royal on a scrap of cloth or baking soda are all deterrents to spiders.

For a spider infestation, poisons don't work very well. Get some scent-baited glue spider traps and place them under furniture against the wall. Make sure the traps are far enough back that pets cannot reach them with their paws. The glue itself is non-toxic, but you would have to pull the trap off of your animal. Periodically replace full traps.
