Your question answers itself. You have to make a judicious decision based on how ill your animal is, can you take the time, how much research you can effectively do online. If you were ill, would "convenience" come into it? You have to weigh your love to your loss.

You can't. The vet needs to actually see the animal to make a proper diagnosis. If it's not "convenient" to properly care for your pet, then don't keep pets.

There are many available websites that you can talk to a live vet at any time. For simple diagnoses this will work just fine but if there is something majorly wrong with your pet then there may not me much of a choice but to take them in. To find a site that will help just search vet help online.

Some vets who will give you basic advice over the phone, but it is impossible to make a diagnosis without seeing your pet. Check with a local dog walker or daycare, they might pick your pet up and take it to the vet for you as part of their service.
