How do you get a bacterial eye infection?

Usually people contract this from touching a contaminated surface and then rubbing their eyes. In a mild case you might not need eye drops - if unsure, consult your doctor.

The most common cause of eye infection is through rubbing your eyes often and not washing your hands frequently. This is treated with eye drops or even eye ointment with germicidal substances.
