My cat used to have separation anxiety. When my cat is stressed, shes quiet and more aloof. She also bathes more than usual, so much that it thins her fur. When shes stressed, I check for fleas that could be causing her discomfort. If that's not the case, something in their life could be missing, i.e. attention or exercise.

Stress is not good for health, it lowers immunity and cat can get be prone to infections. First you have to find out the cause. If that is because of its mating needs, then you have to either let him mate, or give pills to balance hormones, or neuter him. If the cause is environment, provide a quiet room.

Cats can die from stress as it can bring on a number of illnesses just like it can in people. If your cat is too stressed you need to change the environment that is causing the stress and provide a nurturing environment for your animal.
