Generally selections are based off of what the team has done in the regular season. If they finished with a good record and towards the top of their repective conference, they will get into a bowl game.

Teams can be selected to attend a college football bowl by being undefeated for the season, having a strong schedule, winning their conference, and with the help of polls.

Each bowl game is different. Some bowl games select from certain conferences, but all teams that go to a bowl game must have at least a .500 winning percentage. After that, it's up to the Bowl representatives themselves who they want to come to their game and represent their conference.

Different companies have contracts to host the "BCS playoff games" and one of them gets the BCS Championship. Most of them (Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl) have preordained leagues from which they get their competitors; the league winning program of Big12 plays against Big10. The exception being the championship where #1 plays #2.

They must finish with at least a .500 record to qualify, and then the representatives from the Bowls ask them to play.

It depends on what conference the team is in and how many wins the team has. Its like a resume containing who they play and the good teams they beat.

Many college football teams try their hardest to make bowl games, but only very few make it. In order to make a bowl game, they must have a winning record, must have played a somewhat difficult schedule, and be in a strong conference. All of these factors decide whether or not a team will make a bowl game.

Each bowl game is designated as to what conference they get, and what team ranking in that conference. For instance, Alamo Bowl each year always gets the third place team in both the Big 10 and the Big 12, the Rose Bowl the #1 ranked team in the Pac 10 and Big 10, etc.
