They coat the skin and keep it moisturized and damp so the skin won't dry and crack. Some are applied as lotions and others used as a spray.

There is water in human skin, but as it reaches the surface of your body, it evaporates. Moisturizers help to keep the water in your skin to keep it hydrated.
