Locate the nut that clamps the cable to the brake arm and loosen it with a wrench, generally an 8mm box or a 5mm hex. Compress the brake arms so the pads on either side touch the rim, and remove slack from the cable, then tighten the clamp nut. There are several tools for "adding an extra hand" if needed.

Loosen the nut holding down the cable attached to the brakes, pull the brakes shut slightly, then tighten the nut again. This will hold the brake pads closer to the rim of the back wheel, and apply more pressure when they brake handle is squeezed. Make sure you cut off and cap the excess wire.

First, find where the cable is fastened to the brakes.Loosen the nut holding the cable secure, and squeeze the brakes together close to the wheel with your hands. Pull the cable tight, while holding the brakes together, and tighten the nut again.
