The first thing to check is the brackets holding the steering cables at both the motor and steering wheel ends. These sometimes break and should be replaced. Another common problem is the cables get dirty and can become sticky. This can sometimes be cured by a silicon oil.

One of the things that you may have to do is replace the bearing on the steering controls. It is easy to replace and take less then an hour and under a 100 to replace. This is one of the common problems if your boat has bad steering.

The problem is that either one or more bearings are missing or that they have begun to wear down. It will be necessary to dismantle the steering column and replace the bearings.

In general the controls are cables which have turn buckle adjustments and just need to be tightened or loosened as needed. Some have only one nut which you adjust.

check to see if the cables that go to the steering are moving freely or are not frozen from rust. sometimes the cables will get rust in them and not move properly.

Start with the cables make sure they are not cracked or stretched. Stretched cables should be replaced immediately before they snap
