How do I remove a lien from a property?

My property has a lien on it, and we'd like to sell. How do I get the lien off of the property?

A lien is placed on a property to assure that another, often unrelated matter, is resolved. The state could, for example, place a tax lien on a property pending payment of back taxes. The lien is removed when the taxes are paid. Resolve the reason for the lien and the lien will be lifted.

The only way the lien is removed is if the debt is paid. This can either be done by paying off the debt before you sell it or by paying off the lien with proceeds from the property's sale. If the lien is not actually against a debt you incurred, contact the lien holder to be removed.
