You need to be very careful when pruning a Fan Espalier Fruit Tree. You need a pruning saw and you need to make sure you do NOT cut off the seedling branch. Prune around the seedling branch so the fruit has room to grow and doesn't fall off when hit by other leaves.

You can only prune these trees during the proper season. Small touching up pruning can be done throughout the growing season as needed. Be sure to remove unnecessary branches and loosen the ties as needed. Be sure to pick off flower buds so the plant can reach a desired height.

Find two opposite facing buds and prune the main stem about two feet from the ground the first year. The following summer, tie the two shoots that grew from the buds to a stake about 45 degrees. Cut the stems to a foot and a half foot long the second winter just above the buds.

Prune back the main stem about 2 feet above the ground. Tie the two shoots from the two buds with a supporting wire at about 45 degrees. Raise and lower the sides to regulate growth, and this will form your fan.
