Hydrangeas rarely need pruning, but if they are getting to big, firs,t cut out all dead wood, then, about 1 third of the longest stems can be cut back to ground level, this will revitalise the plant and should be done in early summer as if done too late will affect the next years flowering

First you need to use cutting shears. Then make sure you cut the foliage at an angle and wear two pieces are growing together. If you cut the foliage what as referred to a hard cut it will grow back fast and sometimes not as healthy. I recommend you do not cut your hydrangea bush in extreme weather.

If you have mophead hydrangeas you do not need to trim unless they are too big or old. Prune before August, remove all the dead stems and trim the cross branches.

Hydrangeas bllom on two year old stems, so the stems flower every other year. The plant should be trimmed when the flower stems are finished blooming. Cut back ONLY the stems with dead flowers on them. Cutting any other stems will kill the flowers for next year. You can deeply cut back the stems with the dead flowers.

Hydrangeas can be cut after the frost if you live in a region that gets cold enough. They can be trimmed as much or little with the same effect.

Avoid damage by using sharp pruners. Proper timing is after flowering is finished but before dormancy. During dormancy the new buds are formed. You can prune to almost any height.

The best time for trimming hydrangeas without damages could be after its blooming stage. While doing so take care that the younger parts are not to be damaged. Do not ever trim the plant from the back as it may cause injury to healthy wood parts of the plant tissues.
