Follow any of numerous fondant recipes available on the web. Not enough space here to write out a full recipe, but the most important thing to remember is this: read the recipe and FOLLOW IT. Fondant is very, very easy to mess up. There's nothing worse than going through the whole process and it not being edible!

Fondant, a dough made of sugar, water and cornstarch is made by combining the three indredients in a mixing bowl. The ingredients are mixed and the dough is then placed on a flat surface that has been scattered with some cornstarch, the fondant is then rolled out with the rolling pin.

Fondant from scratch (without marshmallows) is usually made with cream, sugar, corn syrup, and several other ingredients, depending on the type of fondant you want to make. Other ingredients may include butter, nuts, fruit, flavorings, honey, etc. The ingredients are cooked to the soft ball stage on a thermometer then cooled and stirred until the proper consistency is reached.

I would just buy it. It's difficult to get the consistency right without a lot of practice. Most bakeries use the pre-made, which can be tinted any color.

The easiest recipe I know is to mix one cup of shortening with a cup of corn syrup, half a teaspoon salt and a teaspoon vanilla extract. Gradually add two pounds of powdered sugar, kneading by hand. If the result is sticky, add more sugar. Roll and use as needed.
