Using a medium weight yarn, chain 180 stitches. In the third chain from hook, complete a double chain. Double chain in each stitch across. Chain 3 (represents first double chain) and double chain in each stitch. Repeat until the blanket is 80 inches long. Finish off.

When tackling a large project like this it is best to break it down to small squares or circles and then join the pieces together, much like a patchwork quilt.

You can crochet one square, doubling back on the top and bottom, but an easier way is to crochet twelve smaller squares and then whip stitch them together. Make your afghan three squares wide and four squares long. Size your squares according to the desired finished dimensions of your afghan.

A standard queen-size blanket is 90 x 100 inches (adjust for amount of overhand desired). Determine how many stiches per inch, then multiply by desired dimensions and add 1.

Crochet 238 squares, with each square measuring 6 inches. Join the squares together to 14 squares wide x 17 squares long. This is how I am doing my bedspread for my queen sized bed, and it includes overhang! Good luck :-)

If you have a King size bed, the Queen would be the same width across without dipping over the edges. If you have a twin bed, it will be roughly double the width. The length is the same.

A queen sized comforter for a bed is around seven feet six inches by seven feet. You can always make it a bit bigger just to be safe.

Choose an afghan queen size blanket pattern, choose an afghan style(common names: Banded, Block, Cozy or Lacy). Then find your favorite yarn colors and styles, there are millions of colors and styles of yarn to choose from. Then you start the trial and error process.

Continued: The example swatch will depend on three things: the size of the hook, the size of the yarn, and how tightly you crochet. The swatch is invaluable! If you have 20 stitches across in a 4x4" swatch and want 100" across, you would multiply 4x20x25 = 2000 stitches.

This takes bit of time, but it will save you SO much in the long run. Crochet a swatch about 4" x 4" as a test square. Count the stitches across. Multiply to get about 100 inches x 100 inches so you will have a little overhang that way! (Continued)

I'm making a crocheted queen size afghan but I'm not making squares. How big would I be needing it for a queen size bed? I need dimensions. I chained over 300 and am dc each row. Will I be doing the true dimensions of a queen size bed or afghan?

Please see my instructions on a test swatch. This is the ONLY way you can know for sure the number of stitches! Just remember to count the # of stitches in the swatch (suggested 4" for a good swatch). Since 100" is a good queen size, you multiply 4x25x#stitches=total numberstitches!  add a comment
