The age of a turtle can be found by counting the rings of one of the scutes on the shell. One ring is roughly one year's growth. To determine the gender of the turtle if the bottom of the shell is convex, most likely male, concave most likely female.

It is nearly impossible to determine the age of a turtle unless you've raised it from when it was very small. Older turtles' shells are very smooth while younger turtle shells show the growth plates. Males have an indentation in the shell and longer claws or toenails.

There is no accurate way to determine the age of a turtle unless you actually witnessed the hatching. You can determine the sex of the turtle by inspecting the tail. Males have longer and thicker tails than females. Males also have a concave appearance on the bottom of their shell.
