How do I keep tree roots from growing after I cut the Old Cottonwood tree down?

You can try to dig them up, but you'll probably need a backhoe for that. You could call in a professional. There are chemical stump removers. You drill a few deep holes in the stump and pour the chemical in and add boiling water.

i would put pesticide along the roots, or where they should be, wait, then i would take a shovel and manually dig out as many roots as i can.

I would thingk if you have someone come in and grind out the stump for you after the tree is down the roots would not be able to grow any longer.

Eventhough you have cut your Cottonwood tree, there are chances of growing from its root. Try to uproot maximum possible rots. You may pour some quantity of kerosene oil over the cut portion of its roots. After few days, the roots will be spoiled and no further growth will occure. Some people apply mercury but it is dangerous to handle.

i think u could poisen the roots (not recomended). hire a certified tree stump grinder company, hire someone with a backhoe to dig it out. dig and chop it out by hand. Pour some deisel on the stump and burn it out. keep cutting any new growth as soon as it grows would eventualy kill the roots

The only way you can stop any tree root from growimng after the tree has been cut down is you have to either have the stump ground out or have the stump and root pulled out and make sure you get all the roots.
