How do I grow butternut squash from seeds?

I'd like to grow new squash plants from the fruits I've just harvested. How do I prepare and plant the seeds?

If your butternut was grown near any other squash, there's a risk of cross-pollination resulting in a hybrid fruit. Assuming you don't, clean the seeds and let them dry thoroughly before airtight storage. Plant the seeds in hills in the spring after the ground has warmed up.
