Caring for a Newfoundland dog is much like caring for any other dog, with a few special additions. They love to swim and enjoy visits to the water.

Newfoundland dogs have a very thick coat that needs to be brushed at least once weekly, with a wide toothed comb. They also will need to have their nails clipped once a week, unless they get walked on pavement every day.

GREAT dog, congratulations! Follow the regular protocol for shots and vet care. Thoroughly brush at least once a week with a wide tooth comb or curry to get down through the undercoat. Newfs don't require huge amounts of exercise, but LOVE and need to swim. Don't overbathe so as not to remove the oily sheen that protects their coat.

There are several ways to make your Newfoundland dogs well cared for. Make sure you brush their fur, play with them daily and make sure they are fed.

You will need a large yard for the dog to run in. Since they have longer hair you will need to bathe and groom the dog regularly too.

Make sure that your dog does not have to go up and down any stairs. This breed is known for having hip problems.

Newfoundland's are big, but they are still like any other dog. You must love, feed, and care for them the way that you would any dog.
