AC Units greatly differ by brand. Since there are some many types of brands I would insist that you refer to your particular AC User Manual. They are quite useful.

A/C or heater units will have a coil or a condenser unit and both have a "drip pan" to collect moisture; empty and spray down with bleach and water mixture.

There is no common cause for a 'plastic smell' coming from the vents. Look for something in the house that may be causing it.

The first step is to clean the vents. Also when turning on your AC, start it on low and gradually turn it up to a more comfortable setting.
