How do I determine the tow capacity of a truck?

I no longer have the owners manual and would like to make sure I am not over doing it.

Take your truck information and look online. Usually there are guides for the spec of certain vehicles. Someone should have the towing capacity listed.

You just have to plug the model of the truck and the words 'tow capacity' into a search engine. That should give you the answer you're looking for. If not, call the dealership.

load the truck with a specified weight. now weight the gross weight of the truck and the load in it. now try to drive the vehicle at an optimum speed.

You'll have to contact the manufacturer because each model has a different tow rating. Most diesel engines can tow more while gasoline engines tend to have higher horse power.

The best way to be able to tell what your towing capacity would be to contact your dealer and then try.
