Starting at age five is a bit late, but always discipline with love. Gently but firmly let the child know what you expect. If necessary, repeat your direction. Try to describe the behavior you want, not what you don't want. There are lots of books available to help you.

Remember you are the adult and you are in charge. Your five year old is acting out for an audience. When he/she starts acting up, leave the room. Reward good behavior with great emphasis. Enrol your child at karate, it's a great sport for focusing energy. Remain calm and in control at all times.

You must implement him a rewards system. That is, if he behaves badly, take away his toys, computer, etc and tell him he'll get his stuff when he behaves.

Set consistent rules. Enforce them by discipline. If he has bad behavior, use time outs in a corner without toys or view of a TV. If he does something dangerous or attempts to physically hurt an adult, use a sharp and immediate slap on the butt. If he is disrepectful or disobedient, leave any place you are and go home.
