In order to be a private investigator, one must be licensed in the state they are practicing in. This training can be accomplished with an online course or college. Even though you will rarely work with government agencies, an interest in law enforcement helps.

Almost all states require private investigators to have a license. Only Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, and South Dakota have no license requirements. The rest of the states have varying requirements, such as having a certain amount of education, passing a state-issued exam, or obtaining certain certificates.
