Michael Jackson suffered from Vitiligo, a rare skin condition which causes loss of pigment in the skin. This is due to destruction of the pigment forming cells in the body.

They say he bleached it, but those rumors have been long denied. I don't quite understand how a person could bleach their skin.

Michael Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease of the skin which results in patches of skin being without pigment. Because his skin was blotchy, he used pancake makeup to even out his skin tone, resulting in paler skin overall. There is also speculation that he used chemical peels to lighten his skin tone.
