He learned to play at age 6 from instructions in a chess set. He later joined chess clubs, where he was mentored by master John Collins and future grandmaster Arnold Denker.
At the age of 6 he began playing chess with his sister/ later still young he joined Brooklyn Chess cloub then Manhattan Chess club the strongest in the country then.
