A fathom is equivalent to 6 feet. It is approximately equal to the distance between the hands of a man's outstretched arms. Ships would drop a weighted rope into the water and when pulling the weight back up, would measure the amount of rope in this way. In the metric system, 1 fathom is equivalent to 1.8288 meters.
