How common is having to have gallbladder surgery within the first six months of giving birth?

It is not uncommon to experiences gallbladder problems during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth. During your pregnancy your gallbladder may not have worked as effectively causing it to leave behind sludge which can form into gallstones. Around 30% of woman experience this sludge while pregnant and around 10 percent of these woman then need to have their gallbladders removed.

Gallbladder complications are very common during pregnancy and after pregnancy. The estrogen and progesterone of pregnancy interferes with the proper functioning of the gallbladder. This causes the bile not to empty properly and stones can form from the not draining gallbladder. Gallstones cause the pain.
