You can't, it takes a professional and possibly an x-ray. But a real good indication is if it still is painful after a week, it is probably broken.

Usually, if a bone is broken, you will not be able to move your hand naturally. If you are worried that your hand is broken, you should get to the hospital for an x-ray. Even if you think it may just be a sprain, you may have a hairline fracture and the hand will need to be set.

The recommended advice would be to get a x-ray. That would leave nothing to doubt. If you are unwilling to go to a doctor, wait and see how it feels after a couple of days.

if the bone is sticking out it is brocken and if you can move it but it still hurts then it is most-likely to be sprained. if either have ooccured go get an x-ray

If you can move it, that does NOT mean it isn't broken. I've broken a leg and a finger and could move both, even though they were broken. If the bone's sticking out, it's a compound fracture, though, and is much more serious. Either way, get your hand checked out.  add a comment

I would take it to a professional. They both hurt and sometimes it can be hard to tell.

Applying pressure to both sides of the bone is a quick way to work out wheather it is broken. If it hurts on both sides it is likely to be broken. (Not totally accurate but a good indication) However it is best to go to a doctor to be sure.
