Freezer burn generally occurs in items that have been in the freezer for lengthy periods of time (months to even years). The packaging and placement in your freezer may give you warnings about what lies beneath the wrapper. One key is to look for a brownish color, especially in meat products. Vegetables will have a whittled appearance.
