Labs can be conditioned not to chew through associating the chewing with negative punishment such as a firm command of "NO" and a tap on the snout.

Is it teething (as in puppy) chewing? Or is it an older dog? It could just be boredom! Buy plenty of chew toys, and help him get plenty of exercise!

You will need to make a visit to your pet store and specifically look for toys meant for a lab his age and weight.

Find a bone or a toy that they adore chewing. Give it to them when you leave and take it away when you return. It should keep them busy.

Puppies have to chew! You have to direct the chewing to items that are appropriate to chew. Provide lots of chew toys for your dog and praise him when he chews one of the toys. Correct by a firm tone of voice when he makes a bad choice.

You can try spraying bitter apple on things that you don't want him to chew that can't be put out of reach. Otherwise, give him something he can chew.
