Dark colors generally make a room look smaller or cozier, so it is to your advantage to paint a room using brighter or lighter colors. If you paint separate walls in distinct shades of lighter colors (for example, one wall is eggshell blue and the other is periwinkle...) this can also create the illusion of space.

The simplest, quickest answer is to paint it a lighter color, normally with a white ceiling. The more complicated answer requires some artwork: Paint scenery on one large wall to look like it opens to the great outdoors, or paint it to look as if you are looking into another room.

By painting one wall in a certain room a different color, it can accent it and make a room look bigger. My Grandma painted one wall red in her living room, and the pillows on her couch are the same color. It accents certain things, and it does make the room look a bit longer.

You will need to use a light colored paint on the ceilings, walls and trim in the room. One of the biggest tricks to making a room look bigger is to incorporate mirrors. You will want to place a mirror on the opposite wall of a window. You want the walls and the mirrors to reflect light.

If you have lighter colored curtains that allow the sun to get in can make the room appear to be bigger. The biggest thing is the paint color. Dark colors make rooms feel smaller, while light colors make it appear bigger. The furniture you use should be scaled to the room. If it's too large it will feel small.
