While it is hard to ignore that ear piercing whining. The best thing you can do is ignore it, most of the time it's just because they aren't getting what they want. But do make sure that the child isn't tired or hungry these also trigger whining.

My mom said that if she gave us what we whined for, it would teach us to whine more. So she didn't, and we didn't. Basic psychology.

First make sure there is nothing wrong medically. If your at home ignore them and send them to they're room if possible,if in a restaurant,or grocery store take them to the restroom turn them around to face the wall, tell them to tell the wall there problems, this usually stops the whining in a couple of minutes.

If your child has "big kids toys" that they like to play with, explain that bid kids dont whine and if he/she doesnt stop you are going to have to take these things away. This worked on my 3 year old.

Take yourself away from the situation each day to keep your sanity. Ignore the behavior and do not acknowledge the whining. Tell your child that you will listen if she speaks without whining. Make sure to listen attentively if she doesn't whine. This will be rewarding positive behavior. You will be amazed how quickly the whining will stop.

As a former teacher and grandmother of nine, I suggest you check out "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" by Sherrill S. Cannon as an alternative solution to the problem of whining children. This rhyming book, found on amazon and Barnes & Noble, is a fun way to help children realize how annoying whining can be!
