In dentistry terms, a hole caused by decay is a cavity. There are many options depending on the severity. If it isn't too deep a simple filling will fix the problem. The next step is a crown with a root canal prior to placing the crown if the problem is severe enough.

Is extraction the only option given to you by your dentist? Sometimes when a hole is too big to retain a restoration or there is not enough tooth structure left to support a crown there is no other option. A baby tooth close to exfoliation won't be filled and extracted instead. Ask for other options.

Extraction is probably the cheapest option available, but it is definitely not the only one. Usually, cavities (holes) can be fixed with fillings. If it is severe, parts of the tooth can be reconstructed. Crowns are another option. For seriously damaged teeth, a crown is placed over the natural tooth.

Rather than extracting the tooth, you can opt to have it filled. Fillings are common procedures and are not painful. You can get many teeth filled in one visit. They can fill the holes with tooth-colored fillings, so it will not even be noticable. You may find that your dental insurance is willing to cover the majority of the procedure.
