Bitmaps are made up of pixels and are essentially a computer file used to store an image. Vector graphics are created using control points. Programs like Flash use the vector graphics.

A bitmap is map of bits, each pixel that makes up the image is described in a grid, this can make the file size very large. A vector is an image described purely by mathematically descriptors, and can have high levels of detail yet remain crisp without dither.
