The cornerstone of English democracy is the document know as the Magna Carta. It was originally issued in 1215 AD and became the Constitutional law for all English speakers and inspiration for US law.

The Magna Carta was signed in England in 1215. Due to his actions in France, his nobles forced King John to sign, making him accountable to the nobles, the people, and under his own law. This was the first time a king had been held so accountable, and is arguably the thing on which all our current governments are based.
