The active ingredient in Sominex is diphenhydramine. Commonly known by the brand name Benadryl, diphenhydramine is an antihistamine and is used to treat allergy symptoms. One side effect is sleepiness. Sominex, when taken as directed, causes drowsiness and should be taken about one half hour before bed. It is not addictive. Do not drive after taking the medication.

Yes Sominex does work! It is not addictive. Of course if you had to take it every night, I would go to the doctor to tell him about your sleep problems. I take it occasionaly and it is a good sleep aid,but I would not want to depend on it.

Sominex is the brand name for diphenhyramine (also Bendryl, Compoz, etc.) It's an antihistamine. Why this makes some people drowsy, it has never worked for me. No, it's not addictive. A better choice might be over-the-counter melatonin.

Sominex may induce drowsiness, but it is not considered a valuable sleep aid, due to the quality of sleep it gives. A more natural OTC solution might be Melatonin, a chemical your body produces when you are sleepy.
