It depends on your energy levels and level of bleeding. If you're having a heavy period and as a result feel like a zombie then you should probably take an iron supplement to replenish your supplies.

Menstruation can definitely affect iron levels. For women with heavy periods, iron loss through menstruation can be very significant. Iron is stored slowly by the body over months, so it is good to take an iron supplement every day, not just during your period. Folic acid can help the body store iron. Calcium can inhibit absorption of iron.

Not really. The menstrual blood has been accumulating all month, you just get rid of it all at once. It's not fresh blood from your veins.

Women in their childbearing years should take iron supplements. A heavy or prolonged cycle can leave a woman anemic. If your flow is not that heavy, it is not required to take supplements, but make sure your diet includes iron rich foods like spinach, bok choy, broccoli and tofu. Red meat is a good source of iron, too.

Yes, it absolutely does. You can lose iron during your monthly cycle, and it can make you lethargic and weak. Taking an extra iron supplement is helpful.

It is a good idea to increase your iron intake during your menstrual cycle if they are heavy. Your body needs iron to make more blood.
