Yes, hydrochlorothiazide can elevate blood sugar levels, so it is important to tell your physician if you have conditions in which this is a factor, such as diabetes.

At high doses, yes, hydrochlorothiazide can affect blood glucose levels - it tends to raise them. The problem is that thiazides tend to lower potassium levels, which raises glucose levels. If the lowering of potassium is prevented, than the thiazide will not raise the glucose. It's generally accepted that the benefit of hydrochlorothiazide outweighs the risk of slight glucose elevations.

Hydrochlorothiazide, which is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention, can elevate blood sugar levels in diabetics. Hydrochlorothiazide may cause blood sugar abnormalities in about 3% of people.

I am a type two diabetic and noticed that even when eating well and dieting my sugars still ran high. I am also on hctz which I now see was what had been causing my high bf numbers. I will ask my doctor for a beta blocker instead.
