Yes an air conditioner does require a drain due to the condensation. The cool air that the air conditioner creates forms condensation when it mixes with the warm air so a drain is required so that the water from the condensation doesn't pool inside the air conditioner and ruin the components.

Yes, an air conditioner requires a drain. The temperature of the evaporator coil is below the dewpoint of the air being cooled, causing the moisture in the air to condense on the coil. This needs to be drained.
