Do you have to go to the dentist to be fitted for a gum shield?

My school requires them for all sports.

No, you can pick up one at your local store, boil it in water and insert in your mouth once cooled slightly and it will form to your teeth.

Going to the dentist generally is not a requirement to be fitted for a gum shield. It will make the gum shield fit much better; however, the gum shield will be much more expensive than buying at a sporting good store. A gum shield can be put in hot water if bought at the store to form to your mouth.

In order to get a proper fitting shield, yes, you should go to the dentist to be fitted for one. However, you can purchase a generic one at stores.

It is best to see the dentist for this because it has to be as good a fit as possible. It would be better to have a good fit than to suffer tooth damage as a result of a cheap mouth guard. Some stores carry cheaply made guards but they are not as available as they used to be.

no. you can buy a customizable gum shield at any drugstore and fit it at your own home. I think that it canĀ“t be any much better if done by a dentist.
