Because of quality problems and competition from Japan the plants of the company had to be closed in 1979. By discounting its television sets and increasing its promotion of appliances, Admiral survived for a while. But with profits falling, the company was sold to Rockwell International Corp., which later pulled it from the TV business.

Admiral, the brand under Continental Radio and Television Corporation, began its run in 1934. After decades of a solid run of sales, including ranking 5th in sales volume in 1939, Admiral's quality began to decrease and demand for Japanese made electronics rose. The last Admiral television was produced in 1979.
