Do Macs need anti-virus/spyware software?

There is a common belief that Macs cannot get viruses. This is false. Macs can get viruses, BUT the majority of viruses are developed to target PC users. This being said, if you have a Mac and don't wish to install any anti-virus or spyware software, then the chances of contracting a virus are very, very slim.

PC's have a different file system then MAC's. Hackers code more for PC since they are usually more vulnerable. So a MAC could have a dormant virus and infect other systems. It is a good idea to have a anti-virus and spy ware programs. Also follow safe computer procedures.

I think it is good to get anti virus /spyware software for the Macs as well. A lot of people say they don't get viruses, but what if you download a file off the internet that contains a virus and that it is compatible for MAC? I think get the anti-virus software to be safe.

Yes, while this is true - most modern email systems (such as webmail like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail) automatically scan files for viruses.

Yes, Macs need anti-virus/spyware software. While there are more viruses written for Windows operating systems, there are keystroke loggers, spyware, email attachments and malicious software spread by file downloads and file sharing that can affect Macs.

There are very few viruses for Macs, but what you say about transmitting viruses to PCs is absolutely true... although the Mac may not get infected, a PC using the same file may get the virus. So, it may be useful to have an anit-virus for you Mac, but since most PCs have it anyway, it may not be necessary.
