Do I need to give a 30 days notice on a month to month lease?

I have been going month to month for about 6 months now.

Most leases do abide by the 30 day rule. This gives the landlord time to display signs and find new renters before you leave. Even though you are leasing on a month to month basis, your landlord probably still has a list of rules that you agreed to. This should be checked before deciding to pack up and move out.

Common decency would demand that you give notice. To be fair, your landlord should have the opportunity to make sure his/her income continues by looking for a new tenant.

Generally speaking yes. Certainly if you had a written lease with them that stipulated a 30 days notice, you do. It is really just a question of courtesy, though, to give your landlord a chance to find a new tenant quickly.
