Yes. The traditional way to deal with this is a surgery called carotid artherectomy. This is when the doctor surgically clears the plaque from the artery. However today there is a less invasive surgery known as carotid stenting. This is when tube-shaped piece of material is inserted into a damaged artery to help it maintain adequate blood flow.

The doctor will first look at your lifestyle choices, and then how much of an occlusion you have. If the blockage requires immeadiate intervention then yes surgery is required.

This can be done with surgery, but doctors try to avoid that, often relying on stents or non-invasive means to relieve these obstructions.

Surgical procedures to clear a carotid artery may depend on the doctor's findings if the arteries are completely or partially blocked by fat deposits, plaques or blood clots. If the fat deposits are not severe treatment may invole lowering your cholesterol and diet.

To clear a carotid artery, the surgery may not be necessary. The same could be cured with the help of the laser beams. It all depends upon how severe the problem is.
